I’ve been training at this gym, MMA Ferocity, for 5 weeks now, and only recently did it occur to me to look up anything on my trainers. I think in part due to the location of the gym (it has an attic type of feel), I assumed that there wasn’t much to the credentials of any of the trainers, this is afterall, Owing Mills, Maryland.
Well, after watching the ‘old man’ who threatened to take my arm home with him dispatch of a few of the fighters preparing for fights, I took a minute to google “George” and a few of my other trainers and you’d be surprised to see what I found….
George R. Cochran, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, trained under and became the first ever to be promoted two ranks at one time, by Helio Gracie. For those that don’t know, Helio, along with his brother Carlos, founded the art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, internationally known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and was the father of UFC hall of famer, Royce Gracie. Basically what I’ve found is that George learned BJJ from the absolute best and most accomplished BJJ practitioner that has ever lived.
My boxing trainer, Kevin Rooney, fought professionally to a record of 21-4-1 and trained Mike Tyson from 1985 to 1988.
After checking out a few of the other trainers, I’ve realized I’m learning from a wide array of talent and for some reason, I felt more prepared and in better shape. I know there is only so much a trainer can do for you, and that the fighter has to in fact fight his own fights, it can’t hurt to be learning BJJ from a guy who trained with the same men who created it, can it?
I’m down in weight this week. In part because of a step-up in the training and in part due to cutting down on the trash that makes up my diet. Beer is down; Mcdonald’s is down, with pizza being the last hurdle to jump.
I’ve come to a conclusion this week that may or may not be true bur we’re going to follow it for a few weeks to see it through anyways. If you’re in shape, then you’re in shape. Whether or not my diet is going to consist as is, or if I were to listen to the masses and turn into a herbivore, the most important facet of this process is the training. I’ll continue to run and train 5 days a week, I’ll rid my diet of alcohol and fast food, but pasta is going to stick around for a little bit longer.
This is either going to lead to me cutting down in weight and being somewhat happy, or me ballooning in weight and having to fight a 210lb heavyweight when my fight date steadily approaches……
No injuries this week. I’m feeling good with 47 weeks to go.
