Between "the Lines"...Week 5
As a high school English teacher the last 5 years, I've been known to "bloody up" students' essays with corrections. As I just finished looking at my week 2 and 3 predictions, I felt like pulling out my red pen and cleaning up the disaster that they became shortly after kickoff. After going 4-2 in week 1, my predictions in the following weeks have been about as impressive as Rosie O'Donnell in a wet t-shirt contest.
Last Week: 0-6 (Yes, this is not a misprint)
Total: 5-13 (What am I, like the Matt Millen of prognosticators?)
#4 LSU at #18 Georgia (-3): Before the season started, I wrote two different 2,000+ word college football previews only to have them lost when my laptop froze up. In them, I wrote how Boise State would play in another BCS game (looks good so far), Alabama would barely lose to the eventual National Champ Gators in the SEC Title Game (looks extremely good so far), Oklahoma would win the Big 12 and go undefeated until they lost to the Gators in the BCS Title Game (not looking too hot now). Anyway, one of the predictions I made was along with the Tide, LSU would finish ahead of Ole Miss (who clearly was going to flop with all the hype surrounding them) in the SEC West. With all that said, I feel strongly about LSU taking care of business in this one. As I've said in each UGA prediction I've made this season, I expect A.J. Green to have a big game, but tomorrow it'll all be in vain. My Pick: LSU.
#7 USC (-4.5) at #24 California: Wow! Honestly, this is a TOUGH one for me to call. The Trojans had a very emotionally draining week with the near-death of Stafon Johnson. While USC is only giving up 57 yards a game on the ground, they have their hands full with the Bears' Jahvid Best. There's no telling how Cal will respond to their 42-3 drubbing at the hands of Oregon last week. This could be a blowout or a Pac-10 classic. My Pick: USC.
#8 Oklahoma (-7.5) at #17 Miami: The Sooners will still be without Bradford and Gresham, and Miami is looking for redemption after getting manhandled by the Hokies last week; unfortunately for the Canes, it won't come in this game. My Pick: Oklahoma.
NCSU at Wake (-2.5): As an NCSU alum, if the $20,000+ I spent in my time on campus didn't buy me anything, it afforded me the luxury of learning one lesson (that I didn't pick up in Tompkins Hall) and that's not to get my hopes when the Pack gets on a roll. The paranoid graduate in me says take Wake and the points; however, there's something special about Russell Wilson. Hopefully, this isn't my heart speaking, but.....My Pick: NCSU.
